About Chernihiv

This is a northern city of Ukraine with a 1,300-year history and more than a hundred of historical and cultural monuments. A city with incredible architecture, dozens of relics from the times of Kyivan Rus, the Principality of Chernihiv and the Hetmanship. During the times of Kyivan Rus, the city’s economic development and defense capabilities gave it the status of second only to Kyiv.

Chernihiv is enveloped in legends, most of which are related to ancient monasteries. Due to the mysticism and romanticism with which the city is infiltrated, residents call it the “city of legends”.

Chernihiv is the center of the Chernihiv region, which borders on Belarus and Russia. Therefore, during the full-scale military invasion, Chernihiv was one of the first cities to resist the aggressors.

On March 6, 2022, the President of Ukraine awarded Chernihiv an honorary distinction – “Hero City of Ukraine” by his Decree to celebrate the achievements, mass heroism and resilience of citizens, shown in the defense of their cities during the repulsion of the russian military aggression.
